1 Timothy 6

Instructions to Those Who Minister

1 ^aAll who are under the yoke as slaves are to regard their own masters as worthy of all honor ^bso that the name of God and our doctrine will not be ^{▼▼Or blasphemed}spoken against. 2 Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are ^dbrothers or sisters, but must serve them all the more, because those who ^{▼▼Or devote themselves to kindness}partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. ^fTeach and ^{▼▼Lit exhort, urge}preach these principles.

3 If anyone ^hadvocates a different doctrine and does not ^{▼▼Lit come to; or come with}agree with ^jsound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine ^kconforming to godliness, 4 he is ^lconceited and understands nothing; but he ^{▼▼Lit is sick about}has a sick craving for ⁿcontroversial questions and ^odisputes about words, from which come envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction between ^ppeople of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who ^qsuppose that ^{▼▼Or religion}godliness is a means of gain. 6 ^sBut godliness actually is a means of ^tgreat gain when accompanied by ^ucontentment. 7 For ^vwe have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it, either. 8 If we ^whave food and ^{▼▼I.e., any covering for protection, mainly clothing}covering, with these we shall be content. 9 ^yBut those who want to get rich fall into temptation and ^za trap, and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For ^aathe love of money is a root of all ^{▼▼Lit the evils}sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have ^acwandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many ^{▼▼Lit pains}griefs.

11 But ^aeflee from these things, you ^afman of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, ^agfaith, ^ahlove, ^{▼▼Or steadfastness}perseverance, and gentleness. 12 ^ajFight the good fight of ^akfaith; ^altake hold of the eternal life ^amto which you were called, and for which you made the good ^anconfession in the presence of ^aomany witnesses. 13 ^apI direct you in the presence of God, who ^{▼▼Or keeps alive}gives life to all things, and of ^arChrist Jesus, who testified the ^asgood confession ^atbefore Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep the commandment without ^{▼▼Lit spot}fault or reproach until the ^avappearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which He will ^{▼▼Lit show}bring about at ^axthe proper time--He who is ^aythe blessed and ^azonly Sovereign, ^bathe King of ^{▼▼Lit those who reign as kings}kings and ^bcLord of ^{▼▼Lit those who rule as lords}lords, 16 ^bewho alone possesses immortality and ^bfdwells in unapproachable light, ^bgwhom ^{▼▼Lit none of mankind}no one has seen or can see. ^biTo Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

17 Instruct those who are rich in ^bjthis present world ^bknot to be conceited or to ^blset their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, ^bmwho richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in ^bngood ^{▼▼Or deeds}works, ^bpto be generous and ready to share, 19 ^bqstoring up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may ^brtake hold of that which is truly life.

20 ^bsTimothy, protect ^btwhat has been entrusted to you, avoiding ^buworldly, empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”-- 21 which some have professed and thereby have ^bvgone astray ^{▼▼Lit concerning}from ^bxthe faith.
